I had my hair cut and highlighted last week, but didn't really know what I was going for until I got to the salon. One of the other stylists had the most lovely haircut... her hair was long but had so much volume at the roots and very short layers around the top of her head with a long sweeping side parting. I asked my stylist if she could recreate that, and she told me it was known as "disconnected layers" - apparently a "more freehand style of layering for hairstyles with a lot of movement and texture". So that's what I did!
I'd never heard of this term before, but it's the cut I've ideally always wanted. My hair is still rather long and blunt cut at the ends which I like, but I now have some layers that are as short as chin length and different lengths all over. The means when the hair is waved it's nice and bouncy with lots of volume, and I no longer have the dreaded flat roots and fat ends scenario which is so common with thick long hair!
It's now so easy to twist with the straighteners, "bumpf" it up a bit and hairspray it to keep it from falling flat. All I need to master is a little backcombing. How do you keep volume in your hair?

It looks so good! Definitely makes me miss having my long hair.

Ah thank you! x
DeleteI have the dreaded flat head hair.. It is so long now and nothing I do achieves any volume. I have tried everything.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I ask for layers they tell me "no" because it will thin my hair out too much :(
This looks so lovely! It's a great style on you.X
Maybe you could get some extensions, not to add length but just to boost your hair's "fatness" a little bit. Clip in ones are amazing, no commitment required!
DeleteI can see how layers thin your hair out for sure, they really do! Great if your hair is super thick but otherwise not so good.
I would definitely recommend some clip ins just to thicken yours out tho, would work a treat! :-) x
I use dry shampoo to get volume. :)
ReplyDeleteAhhh yes! Batiste all the way for me! x
DeleteYour hair looks gorgeous! I always have layered hair as otherwise it would be incredibly flat. xx

Layers are great... annoying when you want to achieve the perfect smooth bun however due to sticky out bits! But great for volume x
DeleteYour hair looks gorgeous!

This looks so nice, I know exactly what to ask for now as opposed to the usual mundane trim xx
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of disconnected layers. I've been cutting my hair for a few years now but have found the shorter the layers, the more va-va volume!

Definitely! That's awesome, I wish I had the skill to cut my own hair! x
DeleteLooks fab, I'm in need of a restyle, may have to think about this!!
ReplyDeleteOoh this looks so lovely, really suits you! I'm growing my hair but am definitely starting to get flat roots/poofy ends syndrome so might have to give something like this a go next time I get a trim :)

The flat roots thing seems to be more and more noticeable the longer your hair gets I noticed! x
DeleteI've just bought some dry shampoo to get volume so hopefully that will work!

Dry Shampoo is brill.. Batiste is my fave! x
Deletewow This is the first time I've seen this haircut... it's awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteFor volume, a little bit of backcomb..honestly I don't spend so much time about this side.
xoxo
Back combing works so well! I so need to learn how to do it properly :-/ x
Deletelove your new style. it's crazy how the way hair is cut makes all the difference in how easy/hard it is to style. as for your question. i don't need to do anything to get volume... my problem is more how to get rid of it! ah! lol.

Ahhh you're lucky! So many people would love that haha x
DeleteI love this! I would love to see a shot from the front so I can see how it looks head on.
ReplyDeleteI'm so lost on what to do with my hair it's unreal. But what I do know is that I'm fed up with it! xx
I will have to take a "front" photo. I know what you mean, if I leave it longer than 2 months between cuts I get so fed up of it I just hate it! We all need a little pampering with our hair now and again :-) x
